Method notes
Each feature of Hypomnema answers a way of reading. The method notes describe that way of reading, so that you understand what you configure before you configure it. Take them as material: you can follow one as it is, adapt it to your reading, or turn it into something else entirely. The settings section of each feature links to its note.
The notes rest on one concern. Writing a comment hands a thought over to a machine. An annotation tool is useful if it helps you take that thought back, reread it and rework it, and harmful if it keeps it in your place. Florian Ernotte develops the idea, in French, under the name operational dispossession.
How a note is built
Section titled “How a note is built”Every note follows the same outline.
The idea describes the reading practice the feature supports. An example from a real reading follows one reading, from the annotated passage to the result. The setting gives the configuration that matches. Variants shows how to adapt it or turn it to another use.
